Meet Justina! Look how stylish she is! Well, she is creative too! And only 10!!! She is definitely following the creative footprints of her mom, Janna Coumoundouros Bissett- Owner of LilacPOP Photography.
Read the little interview below with Justina to find out what inspires her. She’s wise and has some great advice for young artists and crafters.
{Name:} Justina B
{Age:} 10
{Where do you live?} Clawson, MI
{What do you make?}
I make knitted dog scarves and jewelry and I also paint.
{Can you explain the technique(s) you use?} {How did you come up with the idea for your products?}
To make the dog scarves, I tried finger knitting for the first time. It was too small to put around my neck but the size was perfect for my little dog. Then I thought maybe I can make more of them and sell them at my space at the Yellow Door Art Market in Berkley, MI. I watched my mom make jewelry and art my whole life and a little bit of that rubbed off on me.
{How much do you sell them for?}
The dog scarves are $8 each, jewelry is between $5 and $10, and the canvasses are $10-$15.
{I see you are selling them in a store, how did they get there?}
I sell in the student art section of the Yellow Door Art Market in Berkley (yellowdoorartmarket.com) and I started selling there because my mom sells her work there as well.
{Do you have any short term goals for your product in the near future? (More stores, different products, selling online?}
In the future I would like to sell my items online just like my mom does.
{Do you have someone or something that inspires you to be creative?}
My mom inspires me, going shopping in stores, colors.
{What is something you learned during this process of coming up with an idea, creating it, branding your item/business, and finally selling your product?}
I’ve learned to not just think of what I like but what others would like and want to buy.
{What was/is the easiest part?}
The easiest part was painting canvasses because it’s a way I express myself.
{What was/is the hardest part?}
The hardest part is figuring out my price point.
{What other type of art do you make? }
I dabble in a little bit of everything, but I love to draw and paint
{What would you say to other artists and crafters your age to encourage them to start their mini business?}
I would say, “Think of what you see in stores and let that inspire you to make your own stuff. Just be creative and anything can inspire you.”
If you know someone who we should ALL know about, send me a message at tchotchkesatx@gmail.com. More interviews of awesome mini makers coming soon!!
Keep on creating!!
